Why leave money with someone who can no longer spend it?
A coin for the ferryman is one familiar answer. But coins and other objects placed with the dead have served different purposes, and their meaning is not always easy to recover.
Coins for the Dead explores passage-money, grave gifts and the customs surrounding burial. Through historical accounts and archaeological finds, it considers what people hoped to provide for the dead, and what those choices reveal about the living.
Illustrated with public-domain artwork, this is the first volume in the Lore Lorn Chapbooks series.
