In a village near the river, there lived a weaver named Kwaku who could make cloth so fine that birds mistook it for water and tried to land on it. People came from three villages over to buy his kente, and Kwaku grew proud of the queue outside his hut each morning.

One evening, an old woman he didn’t recognize sat down across from his loom. She wore no jewelry and carried no basket, which told him at once she had nothing to trade.

“I have no money for cloth,” she said, “but I’ll pay you well for something else. Sell me your silence.”

Kwaku laughed. “My silence isn’t for sale. I have plenty of it. take some for free.”

“No,” she said. “I want to buy it. Every time you’re tempted to speak ill of your neighbor, or boast of your skill, or repeat a secret that isn’t yours — stay quiet instead, and I’ll pay you a piece of gold for each silence kept.”

Kwaku, seeing easy wealth, agreed at once.

The first week was simple. When a rival weaver’s cloth unraveled at market and the whole village laughed, Kwaku held his tongue instead of joining in, and that night found a gold coin waiting on his mat. When his brother asked why the neighbor’s wife had been crying, and Kwaku knew the answer, he said nothing — another coin appeared.

But as the weeks passed, the silences grew heavier. He watched a man cheat a widow at the market and said nothing, and told himself it wasn’t his business; a coin appeared, but it felt colder in his palm than the last. He watched his own apprentice take credit for a pattern Kwaku had designed, and swallowed his objection to protect his growing pile of gold. He began to notice that the villagers had stopped asking his opinion on anything, because he never gave one anymore. They stopped confiding in him too, because a man who reveals nothing invites nothing in return.

One morning he woke to find his hut circled by silent, watchful faces: no greetings, no gossip, no laughter shared over his threshold. His wife asked what had happened to him, why he’d become a stranger in his own house, and for the first time in months, Kwaku wanted badly to speak. He wanted to tell her everything. But his tongue had grown so unused to speaking honestly that no words came.

The old woman returned that night to find him surrounded by gold and utterly alone.

“You’ve paid for a great deal of silence,” she said.

“Take it all back,” Kwaku said. “I didn’t know silence could be so loud.”

She smiled, and for the first time, took nothing from him, not even the coins already given. “That,” she said, “was the lesson. Some silences protect the peace. Others just protect the coward. You bought both, and couldn’t tell them apart until it cost you everything worth saying.”

She left him with his gold, his loom, and a village that took a long, careful season to trust his voice again.
