Most guides selling you a rune set will tell you it's an unbroken tradition going back thousands of years to the Norse. That's mostly marketing. Here's what you can actually work with, and how to do it honestly;

Know what you're really casting. The Elder Futhark, the alphabet most rune sets are based on, has twenty-four characters and was in use from roughly 150 to 800 CE, primarily as a writing system, not a fortune-telling deck. It shows up on memorial stones, weapons, and everyday objects marking ownership. The oldest piece of evidence anyone cites for actual divination is a passage in Tacitus's Germania, written in 98 CE, where he describes Germanic peoples cutting strips from a fruit tree, marking them with signs, and having a priest draw three of them off a white cloth. The word Tacitus uses for those marks is notis, not the word he'd use for actual letters, and archaeological evidence for runes as a writing system doesn't show up until about a century after he was writing. So the honest answer is: there's real evidence of lot-casting among early Germanic peoples, and it's plausible the marks were runes, but nobody can actually prove that link.

Don't trust the meanings in most beginner books. The rune poems that give each character its symbolic meaning, wealth, protection, ordeal, and so on, are all medieval, composed centuries after the Elder Futhark itself had already been replaced by the Latin alphabet. They're traditional in the sense that they were passed down, not contemporary to the runes' actual working life. And the elaborate divinatory systems most modern practitioners use, reversed meanings, runic astrology, structured spreads, mostly trace back to Guido von List's work in the early 20th century, which he built through his own synthesis rather than recovering some older, hidden system. If a guide tells you upright versus reversed meanings are ancient tradition, that's a modern layer, not a Viking-Age one.

Learn the actual names before you learn the "meanings." Each rune does have a real historical name and a literal translation worth knowing on its own terms. Ansuz means god, tied to Odin and the power of speech. Fehu means cattle or wealth. These names carry real linguistic history, and knowing them gives you something more solid to build from than whatever divinatory gloss a modern book bolts on top.

Be honest with yourself about what you're doing. If you want to cast runes as a way of slowing down and reflecting on a decision, that's a legitimate practice with a long pedigree of similar tools across cultures, coins, cards, casting lots. What it isn't is a recovered ancient Norse oracle with rules Vikings actually followed. Historians who work on this seriously will tell you plainly there's no clear evidence Vikings cast runes for divination at all, only fragments and hints, curses, protective inscriptions, references to something called seiðr, a Norse shamanic tradition that may have overlapped with rune knowledge but isn't well understood even by specialists. Practicing with that gap held clearly in view is different from pretending the gap doesn't exist.

Watch where you buy your information. Runic symbolism has a genuinely ugly modern history running alongside the New Age one. Political extremist movements have spent decades appropriating Norse symbols and runes specifically, following patterns set by the Third Reich, and that's part of why serious historians tend to treat the whole subject carefully rather than playing along with either the mystical marketing or the extremist rebranding. If a source you're reading treats the runes as proof of some pure ancient bloodline wisdom rather than a writing system with a real, messy, well-documented history, put it down.

If you want the real texture of the tradition, read the rune poems themselves. The Old English, Norwegian, and Icelandic rune poems are short, genuinely strange pieces of medieval literature and they are worth reading as poetry instead of instructions. They won't tell you how to do a three-rune draw, but you will learn what an eleventh-century mind associated with the shape of a letter is, which is a real piece of cultural history, not a knockoff of one.

The runes are a real alphabet with a real, well-documented past. Most of what's sold as their divinatory meaning is a twentieth-century invention layered on top of that past. Both things can be true, and knowing the difference doesn't ruin the practice, it just means you're doing it with your eyes open instead of buying a lineage that was never actually there.
